Das von Auguste Mariette gegründete und 1902 eröffnete Museum of Egyptian Antiquities umfasst über 120.000 Artefakte aus mehreren Jahrtausenden altägyptischer Zivilisation. Das neoklassizistische Gebäude, entworfen vom französischen Architekten Marcel Dourgnon, nimmt eine prominente Lage am Tahrir Square in Kairo ein. Die Sammlung reicht von Schätzen aus dem Grab des Tutankhamun über die Narmer-Palette und Statuen der großen Pharaonen bis hin zu Papyri, Münzen und Artefakten aus fast jeder Epoche der altägyptischen Geschichte. Zwar wurden viele Stücke – darunter die Royal Mummies und Teile der Tutankhamun-Sammlung – in das neuere Grand Egyptian Museum und das National Museum of Egyptian Civilization überführt, doch bleibt das Museum mit seiner nach wie vor umfangreichen Sammlung eines der wichtigsten kulturellen Wahrzeichen Kairos. Das Gebäude selbst steht auf Ägyptens UNESCO Tentative List.
