55 Mount Vernon Street ist eines von vier Backstein-Reihenhäusern, die Charles Bulfinch zugeschrieben und 1804 vom Politiker Jonathan Mason für seine Töchter erbaut wurden. Dr. Arthur Nichols und seine Frau Elizabeth erwarben das Haus 1885; ihre älteste Tochter Rose Standish Nichols – Landschaftsgärtnerin, Schriftstellerin, Suffragette und Pazifistin – lebte hier bis zu ihrem Tod 1960 und vermachte es mit der Auflage, es der Öffentlichkeit ab 1961 als Museum zugänglich zu machen. Die historischen Räume spiegeln den persönlichen Geschmack der Familie wider und beherbergen Bostoner Möbel, flämische Bildteppiche, chinesische Keramik sowie eine vergoldete Bronzebüste der Victoria von Augustus Saint-Gaudens, ergänzt durch Alltagsgegenstände wie ein Radio von 1936. Das Haus kann ausschließlich im Rahmen einer Führung besichtigt werden und erstreckt sich über drei Etagen ohne Aufzug.
