Das Stasi Museum befindet sich in Haus 1 der ehemaligen Zentrale des Ministeriums für Staatssicherheit der DDR in Lichtenberg, die 1960/61 als Amtssitz von Stasi-Chef Erich Mielke errichtet wurde. Die 1990 von der Bürgerkomitee-Initiative ASTAK gegründete Gedenkstätte veranschaulicht, wie das „Schild und Schwert der Partei“ aufgebaut war, wie es agierte und wer für diesen Apparat arbeitete. Die Dauerausstellung „Staatssicherheit in der SED-Diktatur“ stützt sich auf Stasi-Unterlagen, Fotografien sowie Überwachungstechnik – Kernstück ist Mielkes originale Büroetage, die nahezu unverändert erhalten geblieben ist.
