L'únic museu dels Estats Units dedicat exclusivament al retrat va obrir les portes el 1968 a l'Old Patent Office Building —un National Historic Landmark iniciat el 1836 que comparteix amb el Smithsonian American Art Museum. A la segona planta, la galeria «America's Presidents» acull l'única col·lecció completa de retrats presidencials fora de la Casa Blanca, encapçalada pel retrat Lansdowne de George Washington, obra de Gilbert Stuart, i la cèlebre pintura de Barack Obama realitzada per Kehinde Wiley el 2018.
