Fundat el 1863 i situat des del 1871 al palau neorenaixentista de Heinrich von Ferstel a l'Stubenring, el MAK és un dels museus d'arts aplicades, disseny i arquitectura més destacats d'Europa. La seva col·lecció aplega mobles i joies dels Wiener Werkstätte, cadires de fusta corbada Thonet, els dissenys de Klimt per al Fris Stoclet, el gabinet de porcellana Du Paquier, art de l'Àsia oriental i una de les millors col·leccions de catifes del món.
