Dreams of This Future: The Collection of Peggy Cooper Cafritz

En cartell19 d’agost del 2026 – 28 de febrer del 2027·16 $

The first exhibition to tell the story of arts advocate Peggy Cooper Cafritz as a collector, drawing on her bequest of over 200 artists of African descent across multiple media.

Més a Nova York

Three chrome lawn jockeys stand partly melted in one of the three rooms. Sanford Biggers's Jocko is one of the few works that survived the 2009 fire that destroyed most of Peggy Cooper Cafritz's first collection, the largest house fire in Washington, DC's history. Two years later she started buying again.

What hangs here is a slice of the 400-plus works she left the Studio Museum: nearly fifty artists, from Kerry James Marshall and Wangechi Mutu to former students of the DC public arts high school she cofounded. You read her voice on every wall: the quotes all come from her own book. Rozeal.'s portrait on a Louis Vuitton suitcase stood in her foyer to greet guests. Most New Yorkers greet theirs with a shoe rack.

No critic has reviewed it yet. Some works are hard going: Njena Surae Jarvis hangs cast body parts from cords and chains that recall lynching. Admission is pay-what-you-can ($16 suggested), free on Sundays and for anyone 16 and under, and Fridays run to 9pm.

  • Sanford Biggers, Jocko

Three chrome-plated bronze lawn jockeys, partly melted, one of the few pieces that came through the 2009 fire at Cafritz's house.

  • Rozeal., Dave, Dove

A man's portrait painted onto a Louis Vuitton suitcase, the LV pattern picked out in blue; it sat in Cafritz's foyer to welcome guests.

  • Hassan Hajjaj, Romancia

A figure poses on a moped named Romancia against bright blue, framed by 46 chicken bouillon boxes laid out like Moroccan zellige tiles.

  • Hank Willis Thomas, Basketball and Chain

A man in Nike sneakers leaps up and out of the frame, his ankles chained to a basketball, shot like a sleek minimalist ad.

  • Simone Leigh, No Face (Black)

A featureless Black female face in terracotta and porcelain, its edge ringed with tiny rosettes Leigh rolled by hand from bits of clay.

You want one artist in depth: nearly fifty artists here, most with a single work.
