Fundat el 1867 per reial decret d'Isabel II, el Museo Arqueológico Nacional (MAN) recorre el passat de la península Ibèrica des de la prehistòria fins a l'edat moderna. Comparteix el seu imponent edifici neoclàssic del segle XIX, projectat per Francisco Jareño, amb la Biblioteca Nacional de España, a prop de la Plaza de Colón. Les seves col·leccions abasten la Hispània ibèrica, romana, visigòtica, islàmica i cristiana, juntament amb antiguitats egípcies, del Pròxim Orient i gregues, articulades al voltant d'icones com la Dama d'Elx i el tresor visigot de Guarrazar. Una profunda remodelació portada a terme entre el 2008 i el 2014 va modernitzar les sales i el seu discurs cronològic.
