Fundat el 1884, el Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga (MNAA) ocupa el Palau Alvor-Pombal, del segle XVII, al carrer Rua das Janelas Verdes, amb vistes al Tajo. La seva col·lecció, formada per unes 40.000 obres, inclou pintura i escultura portugueses i europees, orfebreria i argenteria, mobiliari, ceràmica, tèxtils i art vinculat a les descobertes portugueses. El museu va tancar al públic el 29 de setembre de 2025 per dur a terme obres de renovació en el marc del Pla de Recuperació i Resiliència de Portugal, i encara no se n’ha anunciat la data de reobertura; mentrestant, parts de la col·lecció es poden veure en museus associats d’arreu del país.
