Fundat el 1936 com a Boston Museum of Modern Art, l'ICA és una de les institucions d'art contemporani més antigues dels Estats Units, i l'any 2006 es va traslladar a la façana marítima de Seaport. Diller Scofidio + Renfro van concebre aquest edifici de més de 6.000 metres quadrats com una cinta que es plega sobre si mateixa: el passeig Boston Harborwalk s'eleva fins a la graderia pública Jill Medvedow Grandstand i s'endinsa a l'interior com a paviment i sostre del teatre, mentre que la «caixa de les galeries» del pis superior s'estén en voladís cap a l'aigua sostinguda per quatre grans encavallades. Sota aquest voladís, la Poss Family Mediatheque descendeix en esglaons cap al port. L'espai no compta amb una col·lecció permanent: les sales es renoven contínuament amb exposicions temporals i nous encàrrecs. L'ICA gestiona també el Watershed, un annex estacional d'accés lliure situat en una antiga drassana d'East Boston, accessible amb ferri des del museu mateix.
