يقع National Building Museum داخل مبنى Pension Building الفسيح المشيد من الطوب الأحمر عام 1887، والذي صممه Quartermaster General Montgomery C. Meigs بطراز عصر النهضة الجديد المستوحى من القصور الرومانية، ويُعد المتحف الأمريكي المكرس لفنون العمارة والتصميم والهندسة والتشييد والتخطيط الحضري. تمتد قاعته الكبرى Great Hall بأبعاد تبلغ 316 في 116 قدماً، وتتوسطها ثمانية أعمدة كورنثية هائلة يبلغ ارتفاع كل منها 75 قدماً وقطرها 8 أقدام، وقد بُني كل عمود منها باستخدام نحو 70 ألف طوبة وطُلي ليحاكي رخام سيينا. صُنّف المبنى معلماً تاريخياً وطنياً (National Historic Landmark) عام 1985، بينما تأسس المتحف ذاته بقرار من الكونغرس عام 1980 كمؤسسة خاصة غير ربحية. وإلى جانب المعارض الدائمة حول الإسكان وعمارة LEGO وكتب الأطفال، ينظم المتحف معارض مؤقتة وأعمالاً فنية تركيبية صيفية شهيرة في قاعة Great Hall.
