تأسس المتحف عام 1938 باسم Bohwagak على يد جامع التحف Jeon Hyeong-pil، المعروف باسمه الأدبي Kansong، وكان أول متحف فني خاص في كوريا. وقد شُيّد على يد رائد العمارة الحديثة Park Gil-ryong لصون الكنوز الوطنية من النهب إبان الاستعمار الياباني، ومنها مزهرية من السيلادون اشتُريت بثمن عشرين منزلًا مكسوًّا بالقرميد ومخطوطة Hunminjeongeum. وتدير المتحف اليوم مؤسسة Kansong Art and Culture Foundation، ولا يزال لا يفتح أبوابه للجمهور إلا لإقامة معرضين سنويًا بتذاكر، يستند كل منهما إلى مجموعته التي تضم اثني عشر من الكنوز الوطنية وعشرات الكنوز، وتشمل سيلادون مملكة غوريو، والرسم والخط في عهد جوسون، والمنحوتات البوذية.

Open to the public only during two annual exhibition periods: a spring show (late April-early May) and an autumn show (late September-early October), each running roughly 6-8 weeks. During an exhibition the museum opens Tuesday-Sunday 10:00-18:00, closed Mondays, by advance online reservation only via kansong.org. Outside these exhibition windows the museum is closed to visitors. As of 24 September 2026 no autumn 2026 exhibition dates had been announced yet.
