أسسته القيّمة Marcia Tucker عام 1977، ويكرّس New Museum جهوده لـ"الفن الجديد والأفكار الجديدة"، منتصرًا للفنانين الأحياء قبل أن يلتفت إليهم التيار السائد. مقره الشهير، وهو تكوين من الصناديق البيضاء المتراصة بشكل غير متماثل من تصميم شركة SANAA اليابانية، افتُتح في شارع Bowery عام 2007 واعتُبر معلمًا بارزًا في العمارة المعاصرة. وفي مارس 2026، أعاد المتحف افتتاح أبوابه بعد توسعة صممتها OMA ضاعفت مساحة صالات العرض، مضيفةً درجًا نحتيًا في الأتريوم، وساحة عامة، وغرفة Sky Room في الطابق السابع. وباعتباره مؤسسة لا تمتلك مجموعات دائمة، ينظم المتحف معارض متجددة وطموحة، إلى جانب فعالية New Museum Triennial الدورية المخصصة للفنانين الصاعدين.
