A sign at the front warns of "mature content" and "sharp edges", and a guard tells you not to touch the spikes. They stud every corner of the slabs of hand-polished aluminum leaning against the walls of one windowless room, clearcoated "like a custom Ferrari", in the words of Artforum's David Rimanelli.

Most slabs carry a large photograph, many reworked with AI: Mapplethorpe's Tulip, a Renoir child in a white pinafore, Guston's hooded Klansman painter redone Pixar-style, a muscled CGI Bob Dylan, Victorian erotica and three World Trade Center pictures. Two bare ramps sit in the middle of the room. Step close and your own face shows up in the mirror-bright margins around each picture.

ARTnews's Alex Greenberger called the show "shocking because of how boring it is". Rimanelli found that "what provokes is the serene refusal to explain", and Wolfson isn't explaining. Entry is free at 555 West 24th Street, Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 6pm, until 24 October.

  • The Mapplethorpe tulips, 12(M)

Robert Mapplethorpe's 1984 Tulip, two blooms in a black void, printed onto a spiked, polished aluminum slab with his foundation's permission.

  • Guston's studio, redone

Philip Guston's 1969 The Studio, a hooded Klansman painting his own portrait under a bare bulb, recast by AI in a Pixar cartoon style.

  • The three World Trade Center panels

A grainy black-and-white shot of the towers' architectural model, a night view against a red-violet sky, and the Freedom Tower gleaming in sunlight.

  • The floor ramps

In the middle of the room, two photo-less aluminum wedges rise steeply and lead nowhere, which ARTnews links to Richard Serra's Elevational Wedge.

  • The Renoir girl, 13(L)

Renoir's 1879 portrait of the child Margot Berard in a white pinafore, which Artforum says seems hunted by a nearby picture of Michael Jackson.

You'd rather not see explicit sexual images: several panels show AI-reworked erotica.
