Durero: El primer artista viral

Dürer: The First Viral Artist. The museum's 36 Dürer prints recast him as the first global image-maker, with interactive technology for a fresh look at the Renaissance.

The first exhibit talks back. At the entrance an AI copy of Albrecht Dürer takes your video call, trained on his life, his prints and the Renaissance. When La Razón asked about his first engraving, it named one from 1492.

The title comes from a copyright fight: Marcantonio Raimondi copied Dürer's prints in his own workshop, and the courts sided with Dürer. Around 40 works hang in the Pinacoteca, including all 36 of the museum's own, the largest Dürer holding in Latin America, shown complete for the first time. Wall texts use emojis, and touch tables let you build an exquisite corpse from shapes in the prints. Five centuries before anyone reposted your meme without credit, Dürer took his copycat to court.

The museum is openly courting a younger crowd, but the substance is prints on paper, so stand close. Entry is the MXN 130 general ticket (75 for students, teachers and seniors, under-12s free), and free for everyone on Tuesdays.

The goddess of justice raises a balance in the print the curator calls the masterpiece of the collection.

  • The Apocalypse

Dürer chose 15 scenes from Saint John's Apocalypse to illustrate; look at how he builds the bodies.

  • The Life of the Virgin

Look for the Virgin standing on a crescent moon; the curator traces this series into the altarpieces of colonial Mexico.

  • Two pages of the Treatise on Human Proportions

Dürer's geometry of the body, the side of him the curators tie to his interest in mathematics.
