The Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnıcı) is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns beneath Istanbul, built under Emperor Justinian I in the sixth century to supply the Great Palace. Visitors walk on raised platforms among 336 columns, past two reused Medusa-head column bases. It lies in the Sultanahmet historic area, part of the UNESCO-listed Historic Areas of Istanbul.
