أسسه أوغست مارييت وافتُتح عام 1902، ويحتفظ المتحف المصري للآثار بأكثر من 120,000 قطعة أثرية تمتد عبر آلاف السنين من تاريخ الحضارة المصرية القديمة. ويقع مبناه ذو الطابع الكلاسيكي الجديد، الذي صممه المعماري الفرنسي مارسيل دورنيون، في موقع بارز على ميدان التحرير بالقاهرة. وتشمل المجموعة كنوزاً من مقبرة توت عنخ آمون، ولوحة نارمر، وتماثيل لكبار الفراعنة، وبرديات، وعملات، وقطعاً أثرية من كل عصر تقريباً من عصور مصر القديمة. وعلى الرغم من نقل كثير من المقتنيات - بما فيها مومياءات الملوك وجزء من مجموعة توت عنخ آمون - إلى المتحف المصري الكبير والمتحف القومي للحضارة المصرية الأحدث إنشاءً، يبقى المتحف من أهم المعالم الثقافية في القاهرة بما تبقى له من مجموعة ضخمة. ويُعدّ المبنى نفسه ضمن القائمة التمهيدية لليونسكو (UNESCO Tentative List).
