Martine Gutierrez: Wunderkind

A retrospective of Martine Gutierrez's self-portraiture and cinematic performance work, pairing never-before-seen childhood pieces with reinterpretations of Renaissance masterworks exploring identity.
موقع المتحفA Mona Lisa sticks her tongue out at you. In Martina Lisa (2026), Martine Gutierrez paints herself as Leonardo's sitter, and in her take on Michelangelo's Creation of Adam, the hand reaching out as God's belongs to her mother.
The rest of the show goes back to where that started. You walk into a first gallery with a photograph of her mother's fridge covered in childhood drawings, and a home video of Gutierrez at 15 in gold gloves and pink lipstick, performing to Gwen Stefani. The attic holds her sketchbooks and The Search for True Beauty (1999), a film in which ten-year-old Martine directs her nanny in her own fairy tale. Most Amsterdam ten-year-olds spend their free Wednesday afternoon on a playdate; this one was running a film shoot.
Gutierrez calls it "inner-child maxing". It closes on 18 October. Entry is €12.50, free for under-18s and Museumkaart holders, Thursdays run until 9pm, and the galleries are up the stairs of two canal houses.

Look for Gutierrez painted as the Mona Lisa, in Leonardo's pose, sticking her tongue out.
The Creation of Adam, reworked
Gutierrez takes Adam's place, and the outstretched hand of God is her mother's.
Mom's Refrigerator
A photograph of the family fridge papered with her childhood drawings: "I Love You Mommy", mermaids, hearts and birthday messages.

A home video of Gutierrez at 15, in golden gloves and pink lipstick, performing to Gwen Stefani.
The Search for True Beauty (1999)
In the attic, the film a ten-year-old Gutierrez made, directing her nanny in a fairy tale she wrote and playing all the supporting roles.

Under-18s get in free. The galleries are spread over many stairs in two canal houses, so prams have to be left at reception.
