Il Japan Folk Crafts Museum (Nihon Mingeikan) fu fondato nel 1936 dal filosofo e critico Yanagi Soetsu, che coniò il termine «mingei» (artigianato popolare) per celebrare la bellezza degli oggetti d’uso quotidiano realizzati anonimamente. Ospitato in un edificio tradizionale giapponese con un portale di epoca Meiji trasferito da Tochigi, il museo conserva circa 17.000 opere, tra cui ceramiche, tessuti, oggetti laccati e manufatti in legno provenienti dal Giappone e dall’estero. Le gallerie principali ospitano mostre temporanee a rotazione, affiancate da una selezione più raccolta della collezione permanente. L’edificio adiacente, il West Building, già residenza di Yanagi, è aperto al pubblico solo in determinati giorni.
