Il museo espone la collezione privata del magnate del petrolio Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian: circa seimila opere, di cui un migliaio esposte, che spaziano dall’antico Egitto al mondo islamico, dalla Cina e dal Giappone alla pittura europea, passando per i mobili francesi e i gioielli di René Lalique. L’edificio modernista, progettato da Ruy Jervis d’Athouguia, Alberto Pessoa e Pedro Cid, è stato inaugurato nel 1969 e si affaccia sul Gulbenkian Garden. Ha riaperto il 18 luglio 2026 dopo 18 mesi di lavori di ristrutturazione, che hanno restituito ai materiali originali il loro aspetto e aggiunto una nuova sala della numismatica.
