Fondato nel 1881 e trasferito nel 1903 nell'attuale edificio, costruito appositamente in stile neo-mamelucco, il Museum of Islamic Art custodisce una delle collezioni di manufatti islamici più vaste al mondo. Circa 4.500 oggetti sono esposti in 25 sale su due piani, selezionati da una collezione complessiva che supera i 100.000 pezzi. Il patrimonio abbraccia un arco temporale che va dalla dinastia Omayyade del VII secolo all'Impero Ottomano del XIX secolo, comprendendo intagli in legno finemente lavorati, ceramiche, manufatti in metallo, vetro, cristallo, tessuti e rari manoscritti coranici con calligrafia in inchiostro d'argento. Tra i pezzi più notevoli figurano una chiave della Ka'ba risalente all'epoca mamelucca e tessuti con antiche iscrizioni cufiche. Nel gennaio 2014, un'autobomba diretta contro un vicino comando di polizia danneggiò gravemente il museo, che dopo un ampio restauro ha riaperto nel 2017.
