iMAXXI - National Museum of 21st Century Arts · Flaminio
A trilogy of films and a series of photographs on identity, power and belonging, centred on activist and YouTuber Nasim Aghdam and the tensions of the American Dream.
Aurrebista: erakusketa ireki aurretik idatzia
On Wall Street, office workers repeat the same choreographed moves until a voice cuts through and the crowd follows it to Nasim, who starts to perform. She is built on Nasim Aghdam, the Iranian-born YouTuber who opened fire at YouTube's headquarters in 2018 and then took her own life. Pegah Ferydoni plays her.
Shirin Neshat splits the story into three films. You follow Nasim through an immigrant neighbourhood in Brooklyn, then onto Wall Street, then into her suburban home, where she sings, dances and changes costume for her videos. Public life is shot in black and white, and her own world turns to colour. At MAXXI the films sit in a set built for Galleria 5, alongside a series of photographs. The trilogy premiered at Palazzo Marin in Venice during the 2026 Biennale.
The films start from a real shooting and a suicide. Entry is a MAXXI ticket, €15 at the desk or €14 online, free under 18. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 7pm.
The Wall Street crowd
Office workers locked in repetitive, choreographed movements break off to follow a voice to Nasim, then stop to listen as she performs.
Nasim at home
In the third film she sings, dances and switches characters and costumes, parodying images of American power, wealth and desirability.
Brooklyn in black and white
The first film walks Nasim through an immigrant neighbourhood, among damaged mannequins and broken bodies, shot as black-and-white social realism.
Under-18s get in free. The films draw on a real 2018 shooting and the shooter's suicide, and MAXXI gives no age guidance.
