Construïda el 1933 com a residència del príncep Asaka Yasuhiko a Tòquio, aquesta mansió art déco es va projectar amb la col·laboració de l’artista francès Henri Rapin i incorpora obra de vidre decorativa de René Lalique. Després d’haver estat la residència del primer ministre i una casa d’hostes de l’Estat, el 1983 es va convertir en museu. La renovació del 2014 hi va afegir un annex modern, projectat amb el fotògraf Hiroshi Sugimoto, i el recinte inclou un jardí japonès amb una casa de te del 1936 i escultures a l’aire lliure.
