Conegut com a MOMAT, va ser el primer museu nacional d’art del Japó. Va obrir les portes el 1952 i el 1969 es va traslladar a l’edifici actual, dissenyat per Yoshiro Taniguchi, al parc de Kitanomaru. La seva col·lecció, formada per més de 13.000 obres, inclou pintura, gravats, escultura, fotografia i cal·ligrafia japoneses i internacionals, des de l’era Meiji fins a l’actualitat. Les obres es presenten en mostres rotatives de la «MOMAT Collection», juntament amb exposicions temporals. El museu es troba al costat del fossat del Palau Imperial, a poca distància a peu de l’estació de Takebashi.
