El Japan Folk Crafts Museum (Nihon Mingeikan) va ser fundat el 1936 pel filòsof i crític Yanagi Soetsu, que va encunyar el terme «mingei» (artesania popular) per reivindicar la bellesa dels objectes d’ús quotidià, elaborats de manera anònima. El museu ocupa un edifici tradicional japonès amb una porta de l’era Meiji traslladada des de Tochigi i conserva unes 17.000 peces, entre les quals hi ha ceràmica, tèxtils, objectes lacats i treballs de fusta del Japó i d’altres països. Les galeries principals acullen exposicions temporals que es renoven periòdicament, al costat d’una mostra més petita de la col·lecció permanent. L’edifici annex West Building, antiga residència de Yanagi, obre al públic alguns dies concrets.
