Construïda entre 1869 i 1875 per l'arquitecte Henri Parent com a residència del banquer i col·leccionista Édouard André i de la pintora de societat Nélie Jacquemart, la mansió va ser llegada a l'Institut de France i es va obrir com a museu el 1913. Les seves sales, ricament decorades, exhibeixen obres mestres del Renaixement italià de Botticelli, Mantegna, Uccello i Bellini, juntament amb pintura francesa del segle XVIII i obres flamenques de Rembrandt i Frans Hals. El Museu Italià, una escala monumental amb frescos de Tiepolo i un Jardí d'Hivern amb sostre de vidre recreen l'atmosfera d'una gran residència parisenca del segle XIX.
