Fundada pel joier Cartier el 1984, és una de les institucions privades d'art contemporani més importants de França, amb una col·lecció de més de 1.500 obres de més de 350 artistes. L'octubre de 2025 va deixar el cèlebre pavelló de vidre de Jean Nouvel al Boulevard Raspail per traslladar-se a una nova i vasta seu davant del Louvre, novament dissenyada per Nouvel a l'interior dels antics i protegits Grands Magasins du Louvre. El seu programa dona suport a artistes consagrats i emergents en els àmbits de l'art, l'arquitectura, la fotografia, el disseny i la ciència, amb tres claraboies acristallades i sales mòbils que il·luminen uns 8.400 m2 d'espai.
