Fundat el 1881 i traslladat el 1903 a l'actual edifici neomamelucà construït expressament per acollir-lo, el Museum of Islamic Art conserva una de les col·leccions d'art islàmic més extenses del món. Al voltant de 4.500 objectes es mostren en 25 sales repartides en dues plantes, seleccionats d'un fons total que supera les 100.000 peces. Les col·leccions abracen des de la dinastia omeia del segle VII fins a l'Imperi otomà del segle XIX, i inclouen fusta tallada amb gran finesa, ceràmica, metall, vidre, cristall, teixits i rars manuscrits alcorànics amb cal·ligrafia en tinta d'argent. Entre les peces destacades hi ha una clau de la Kaaba de l'època mameluca i teixits amb antigues inscripcions cúfiques. El gener de 2014, un cotxe bomba dirigit contra una comissaria de policia propera va malmetre greument el museu; després d'una àmplia restauració, va reobrir les portes el 2017.
