Construïda entre 1859 i 1860 a partir dels plànols d'Edward Clarke Cabot, la Gibson House va ser una de les primeres residències que es van aixecar als terrenys guanyats a les aigües de Back Bay: una casa adossada d'estil neorenaixentista italià en gres rogenc i maó vermell. Tres generacions de la família Gibson i el seu servei domèstic van viure al 137 Beacon Street entre 1859 i 1954; l'últim descendent, Charles Hammond Gibson Jr., va llegar la casa i tot el seu contingut perquè es convertís en museu, que va obrir les portes el 1957.
