Democracy does not exist - We make it!

Orain ikusgai2026(e)ko uztailaren 1(a) – 2027(e)ko apirilaren 15(a)·160 kr

Interactive show built with V-Dem research and personal stories, exploring fair elections, freedom, equality, openness and participation.

One object here is a life jacket that would drown you. It is a fake, made of cheap material and sold to refugees crossing the Mediterranean, and it turns heavy once wet. Mar, from Spain, chose it: Mar's organisation, Open Arms, has collected these vests and sent them to the EU and the Pope.

Each person featured picked one everyday object that stands for democratic engagement, shown with their story. You go from the life jacket to Myriam's train ticket into Paris, a "freedom pass" out of the suburbs, and to the basketball net that started Nikos's student activism in Greece. The themes come from V-Dem research at the University of Gothenburg, which tracks democracy in more than 200 countries: fair elections, freedom, equality, openness and participation.

The museum gives no ready answers, by design, and the show keeps growing: new stories are added during the run, and visitors can leave their own. Expect reading rather than antiquities. Entry is the 160 SEK museum ticket, free for under-19s.

Ez galdu

  • Mar's life jacket

Look for a counterfeit life vest of the kind sold to refugees on the Mediterranean: cheap filling that soaks up water and pulls the wearer down.

  • Myriam's train ticket

An ordinary ticket into Paris from the suburbs, which Myriam describes as a freedom pass and a sign of equal citizenship.

  • Nikos's basketball net

A schoolyard basketball net from Greece: getting the head teacher to allow it, as a student council rep, was where Nikos's democratic engagement began.
