iSan Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) · SoMa
A design show on how objects shape the way we eat, and how dining becomes a communal and cultural experience.
Philippe Starck's Juicy Salif, the space-alien aluminium juicer, is on show here with a frank verdict from co-curator Daryl McCurdy: "Using it makes a huge mess, the finish tarnishes, and it tips over."
You walk the length of a long banquet table on Floor 3, set with more than 40 pieces of tableware from nearly 100 years of SFMOMA's design collection. Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius's plain tea service shares it with Roberto Lugo's 2022 teapot, painted with Lil Wayne on one side and James Baldwin on the other. On the walls, Oakland artist Lucy Stark's tablecloths carry drawings of the objects on the table. Edith Heath's studio mug was designed so you can hold a coffee and a cigarette in one fist, "twice the vice", the curators note. It's also the one piece here you may already own, minus the cigarette.
Entry is included with general admission ($30, free for 18 and under), with no separate ticket. SFMOMA is closed Wednesdays and open until 20:00 on Thursdays.
Roberto Lugo's Lil Wayne and James Baldwin teapot
Look for the 2022 ceramic teapot with the rapper's portrait on one side and the writer's on the other, framed by bright patterns.
Soft-geometry's Mirrors for Aliens
Steel Indian thalis, the compartmented food trays, hand-polished into wall mirrors that throw back a softly distorted reflection of you.
Gumdesign's Swing wine glass
A glass bump under the round foot means this goblet can't stand upright, which the curators say makes guests work for their wine.
Natalia Criado's Mucura teapot
Two silver-plated pots meet spout to spout; you lift the whole thing by its handle and pour from a bird's mouth at the far end.
Starck's Juicy Salif
The 1990 aluminium juicer on its tall legs, kept here as design history even though its own curator says it tips over.
Visitors 18 and under get in free, and the show needs no separate ticket.
