The image the museum leads with, Kara Walker's Untitled Self Portrait from 2024, has no face in it. It is layers of painted paper in red, plum and tan, cut into a rounded, head-like shape and pasted onto white. The title of the show refers to that step: reality turned over in an artist's head and coming out as art.

Each room on the ground floor belongs to one of eight artists: Nicole Eisenman, Jana Euler, Louis Fratino, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Deana Lawson, Martine Syms, Wolfgang Tillmans and Walker. Painting, photography and sculpture get equal billing, all from the Brandhorst Collection and the Eva Felten Photography Collection. You can go from Euler's huge mirrored face, blue eyes staring out of the top corners, to Fratino's back garden at night under a string of bulbs.

The normal €7 ticket covers it (€1 on Sundays), and Thursdays run until 8pm, when themed tours at 6:30pm pair the artists up. The opening on 29 October at 7pm is free, with a DJ afterwards.

Ez galdu

  • Jana Euler's Venice Void

A man's face is painted huge and folded in on itself, so two blue eyes stare from the top corners and two ears frame a white cross-shaped hole.

  • Louis Fratino's Garden at Dusk

Look down on a man reading at a garden table with a carafe and bottles, while a string of bulbs glows over a dense, dark mass of flowers.

  • Nicole Eisenman's Self-Portrait With Deadline

The artist leans over a sheet of paper at a cream table, next to a tall white vase of blue thistles and an open box of pastels.

  • Kara Walker's A Sublime Landscape with No One In It

Across two framed panels, black cut-paper silhouettes, one of them blindfolded, grapple and fall among torn scraps of green painted paper.

Under-18s get in free, and a one-hour German-language tour for families and teenagers runs on selected Saturdays at 3:30pm, included in admission. The museum says Kara Walker's work draws on racial violence in American history.
