The first UK museum show by author-illustrator Charlie Mackesy: never-before-seen early sketches and original works from The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse.
Aurrebista: erakusketa ireki aurretik idatzia
Charlie Mackesy first came into Dulwich Picture Gallery at 19, having biked past it. This is now his first UK museum exhibition: one room of early sketches never shown before, unpublished studies and finished drawings from The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse and its sequel, plus a new drawing of the four characters made for Dulwich.
Kate Bryan, who curated it, put the 'messy' preparatory sketches next to the finished pages so you can see how the simple final lines were reached. The audio guide is a 'soft monologue' by Mackesy about his technique, and visitors are invited to make drawings of their own.
Entry comes with a standard Gallery admission ticket, so the collection's Rembrandts and Rubens are part of the same visit.
Hasierako zirriborro nahasiak azken orrialdeen ondoan daude zintzilik; horrela, mutikoak eta azeriak beren lerroak nola aurkitzen dituzten ikusiko duzu. Gela bakarra, argitaratu gabeko azterlanekin eta Dulwichentzat espresuki egindako marrazki berri batekin. Batez ere, liburua lehendik maite dutenentzat.
The new drawing
Look for the original drawing of the boy, mole, fox and horse that Mackesy made for this show.
The 'messy' sketches
Preparatory studies hang beside the finished illustrations they led to.
The audio guide
Mackesy narrates it himself, a 'soft monologue' on how he works.
You're travelling in just for this: it's a single room.
Dulwich lets under-18s in free, and the show invites visitors of all ages to make their own drawings in response to the work.
