Frank Bowling: Creation and Destruction
Frank Bowling's paintings alongside works by Francis Bacon and Victor Willing, including the Map series and a 2026 work, shown partly for the first time in Istanbul.

In Bowling's Map paintings from 1967 to 1971, stencilled outlines of South America, Africa or Australia sit on fields of colour. Istanbul spans two continents; these canvases bring three more. At the other end of his career is Mother's House Revisited (2026), the latest of the silkscreened canvases he builds around the image of his childhood home in Guyana.
It is Bowling's first show in Istanbul, and some paintings have never been exhibited before. Curator Alistair Hicks hangs them with works by Francis Bacon and Victor Willing, which he calls "interruptions" and "compass points" for getting your bearings. You go from Bowling's poured, layered surfaces to Bacon, who reworked and destroyed his canvases: that is the title. Four Bacons are lent by the Sainsbury Centre, including Portrait of Lisa (1956), plus Willing's late Head VI (1985).
Expect a three-artist conversation, not a straight retrospective. Tickets are 450 TL (250 TL reduced), students go free on Wednesdays, and the museum stays open until 22:00 on Fridays.
