Jamie Fitzpatrick: Memorials to Sausage Politics

Aste honetan amaitzen da2026(e)ko uztailaren 24(a) – 2026(e)ko urriaren 25(a)·Doan

Jamie Fitzpatrick probes Edinburgh's statues, monuments and civic decoration through bronze-pigment screenprints and sculptures that puncture monumental authority.

You walk in and a wigged figure with a melting, clown-like smile rises out of a heap of rubble, its neck-tie gone verdigris green. Jamie Fitzpatrick built it from pieces of real Edinburgh statues, studied from a six-foot ladder on early Sunday mornings.

The sculptures fill the 8-metre-high gallery and slump over their plinths as if about to topple. Around them hang big screenprints in bronze pigment and thick oil bar, some hung high so you look up as you would at a statue, one at 1:1 scale across the whole back wall. The title is Bismarck's line about not watching sausages or laws being made. Glasgow put a traffic cone on its Duke of Wellington; Edinburgh needed an 8-metre gallery to make the same point.

The Scotsman's Susan Mansfield said it "pricks the ponderousness of statuary with enjoyable results". The catch, by the artist's own account: he wants you to "go away scared". Entry is free and walk-in, Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 6pm, until 25 October.

Ez galdu

  • The wigged figure at the entrance

Look for the figure emerging from rubble and detritus, with a powdered wig, a verdigris neck-tie and a melting, clown-like smile.

  • The back-wall print

A screenprint of the sculptures at one-to-one scale covers the entire back wall and stands over you the way a city monument does.

  • The prints hung high

Large collaged screenprints layered in metallic bronze pigment and impasto oil bar show Edinburgh monuments, hung high on the walls so you feel their dominance.

  • The toppling sculptures

Fitzpatrick made the sculptures look as if they are about to fall, sliding and tilting over their plinths.
