Dulwich Picture Gallery was designed by Sir John Soane in 1811 and still feels intimate and unhurried. The collection is small but superb — Rembrandt, Rubens, Poussin, Gainsborough, and Canaletto in purpose-built rooms with natural skylighting that influenced gallery design worldwide. It's a lovely reason to venture south of the river, and the surrounding Dulwich Village is charming. The temporary exhibitions are consistently well-curated.
