Housed in the former Bethlem Royal Hospital, the IWM covers British and Commonwealth conflict from 1914 to the present. The atrium display of suspended aircraft and vehicles is dramatic, but the museum's real strength is in personal testimony — the Holocaust galleries are profoundly affecting, and the First World War galleries make you feel the weight of the trenches. Not just a military museum; it's about what war does to people.
