The Courtauld punches absurdly above its weight for a small gallery. Manet's A Bar at the Folies-Bergère, Renoir's La Loge, Van Gogh's Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear, multiple Cézannes — the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist collection rivals museums ten times its size. The human-scaled galleries in Somerset House make it easy to spend real time with each painting. The medieval and Renaissance galleries upstairs are equally rewarding and far less crowded.
