The RA has been running since 1768, and the annual Summer Exhibition — an open-submission show that's equal parts masterpiece and chaos — is a London institution. The main galleries host blockbuster exhibitions, while the Sackler Wing (connected via a David Chipperfield-designed walkway) shows more contemporary work. The free collection rooms offer a rotating selection from the academicians' diploma works. Friday late openings are excellent.
